Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský announced on Tuesday that Slovenia has joined the Czech initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine. Austria refused however, citing their country’s longstanding military neutrality.

Lipavský participated in a meeting of ministers from the C-5 format on Tuesday, which includes: the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria.

Ljubljana plans to allocate EUR 1 million for ammunition for Ukraine. Austrians officially declined to participate in the Czech initiative, citing military neutrality of the country. Hungary and Slovakia did not join the program among the C-5 countries. Lipavský admitted that he expected such a decision.

The Czech minister emphasized that the most important thing now is to support Ukraine. He added that support should be provided in every possible way, including humanitarian aid. In discussions with partners, he emphasized that support for Ukraine includes advocating for the start of accession negotiations between Kyiv and the European Union.

The Czech initiative involves the purchase of at least 800,000 artillery shells from countries outside the EU. The operation is kept secret - the countries providing funds for the purchase are made known, but not the countries selling the ammunition.

S. Korea can help

Ukrainian Lieutenant General Ivan Havruliuk predicts a significant decrease in the artillery shell gap between Ukraine and Russia within a month or two, attributing it to enhanced production capabilities and support from allies.

Experts in the United States suggest that, given Ukraine’s critical shortage of artillery ammunition, the US could seek assistance from South Korea. This would involve the transfer of 105mm caliber ammunition, which Seoul is gradually discontinuing.

South Korea possesses approximately 3.4 million 105-millimeter artillery shells compatible with all of Ukraine’s 105-millimeter howitzers, including the British L119 and American M101.
