The Polish government has approved a PLN 500-million (EUR 116-million) program to support the country’s eastern regions that have been economically affected by the war in Ukraine, announced Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, the Polish Minister of Funds and Regional Policy.

Although physically untouched, the war has disrupted sectors such as tourism in the regions along Poland’s eastern border.

“The cabinet has just adopted a program supporting 184 municipalities near the border in eastern Poland to the sum of PLN 500 million (EUR 116 mln),” Pełczyńska-Nałęcz wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday.

She went on: “I am on my way to Biała Podlaska, where I will officially inaugurate the program. Russia is acting more and more aggressively. Our response is national solidarity. Support for those who find themselves in the most difficult situation because of the war.” At the beginning of March, Jacek Protas, the deputy funds minister, announced that the government would introduce a northeast border province development program for the years 2024–2030 within the next couple of weeks.

In 2024, local governments will have the first PLN 100 million (EUR 23.2 mln) at their disposal.

According to Protas, the project is aimed at supporting those regions suffering the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
