Over 400 migrants attempted to enter Poland from Belarus over weekend: report

According to the Polish Border Guard (SG), as many as 444 migrants have attempted to cross the Belarusian border into Poland illegally over the past three days.

The official figures, posted by SG on Monday on X, formerly Twitter, showed that there were 198 attempts made on Friday, 91 attempts on Saturday, and 155 attempts on Sunday.

“The migrants attacked the officers protecting the Polish border with stones, branches, and burning logs,” said Katarzyna Zdanowicz, the spokesperson of the Podlasie unit of SG.

“In the course of the attacks, one guard and one soldier of the Polish Army were injured,” she added. “Their lives are not in danger.”

A video of burning branches being thrown over the fence near northeastern Białowieża Forest was attached to the post.

Upon seeing the guards, people on the Belarusian side of the border started to destroy the fence and throw burning logs and branches.

Since the beginning of March, SG has recorded more than 2,400 attempts to cross the border illegally, significantly more than in January and February. According to data from the Podlasie province SG, the migrants attempting to cross into Poland came from 24 countries.

Poland has been dealing with the issue of migrants trying to cross the border from Belarus since 2021 and has recently completed the construction of a security barrier costing PLN 85 million (EUR 19.73 million).
