Some 200,000 residents of Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, are still without power after a massive Russian missile attack on the country's energy infrastructure last Friday, the head of the region’s military authorities, Oleh Syniehubov, announced on Monday.
“Power engineers continue to work 24/7 to eliminate the aftermath of the shelling. Up to 200,000 people are currently disconnected (from power supply),” he wrote on Telegram.
Electricity for residents of the city and the region is being supplied on an hourly schedule, he explained, adding that 157 children have been evacuated from two municipalities in the Russian-attacked region.
Kharkiv was Ukraine’s second-largest city until the Russian invasion. Russian forces struck critical infrastructure and energy facilities in more than a dozen Ukrainian regions, including Kharkiv, on Thursday night and Friday morning using missiles and drones. The attacks killed five and wounded about 20 people.
Russia launched 151 cruise missiles and strike drones toward Ukraine. Ukraine's air defense forces downed 92 of them.
Ukraine maintaining electricity imports
Ukraine is maintaining electricity imports at a high level on Monday and plans no power exports after Russian attacks on the energy sector, the Ukrainian energy ministry said.
“For the current day, electricity imports are forecast at 14,887 megawatt hours (MWh). No exports are expected,” the ministry said in a statement.
Ukraine imported 14,900 MWh on Sunday and 3,300 MWh a day before the massive attack on the Ukrainian power sector on March 22.
