France’s Ministry of Defense has strongly condemned remarks made by the head of the Russian intelligence service, Sergey Naryshkin, about alleged plans to deploy French soldiers to Ukraine, labeling them as “an irresponsible provocation.” The ministry accused Russia of engaging in systematic disinformation campaigns, citing Naryshkin’s comments as a prime example.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the French Ministry commented on the remarks made by the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). The ministry described Naryshkin’s comments as an example of the “systematic use of mass disinformation, widely employed by Russia.” The ministry further added, “we consider this kind of provocation irresponsible.”
Naryshkin had previously claimed that France was preparing to send 2,000 soldiers to Ukraine, warning that they would become targets for Russian military forces.
These statements emerged following French President Emmanuel Macron’s adoption of a more stringent stance towards Russia, suggesting the potential deployment of Western ground troops in Ukraine.
The French government had previously raised concerns about being subjected to Moscow’s disinformation efforts, which have intensified notably since mid-January. Russia had alleged the presence of French mercenaries in Ukraine, a claim promptly refuted by France.
