Football: Lewandowski delivers sparkling display against Atletico

Robert Lewandowski was in top form for Barcelona against Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The Polish national team captain scored and notched up two assists in a man-of-the match performance.

With Barcelona in relatively inconsistent form this season and Athletico traditionally putting up a stern test, the Catalans were wary coming into this fixture. However, Barcelona won 3-0, with Lewandowski providing assists for Joao Felix and Fermin Lopez and heading in a goal for himself in between.
The media were certainly impressed with his display; the Spanish daily ‘Marca’ gave him eight out of ten, higher than any other player. While the Catalan ‘Sport’ awarded the Pole a nine out of ten.

Race for the Pichichi

The win sees Barcelona return to second place, eight behind league leaders Real Madrid.

Sunday’s goal took Lewandowski’s total to 13 league goals this season, leaving him trailing top scorer Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) by three in the race for the Pichichi (La Liga top scorer trophy).

Euro 2024

Lewandowski’s attention will now turn to national team affairs, with Poland facing Estonia in their Euro 2024 semi-final play-off in Warsaw on Wednesday, which will be broadcast live on TVP Sport.

If Poland can overcome Estonia, they will face either Finland or Wales five days later in the play-off final for a place at this summer’s Euro 2024 in Germany.
