The Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, stated on Monday that the imitation of presidential elections in Russia, which took place under unprecedented restrictions on civil and political rights, cannot be recognized or called elections.

“Law cannot arise from lawlessness, and coercion, oppression, and fraud cannot provide the basis for legitimacy respected on the international stage. Therefore, we do not consider or call this falsified and simulated procedure elections because, unfortunately, it more closely resembles a tragic farce,” reads Landsbergis’ statement.

According to the Lithuanian news agency BNS, the Russian Central Election Commission reported that, after counting votes from over 90% of polling stations, incumbent Russian leader Vladimir Putin received approximately 87% of the votes.

Minister Landsbergis emphasized that the electoral “procedure was neither fair nor free and did not comply with any widely accepted standards of democracy and the rule of law.”

Polish stance

Polish Foreign Ministry also commented on the Russian election on Sunday.

“The voting took place amid harsh repressions against society, preventing it from making a free, democratic choice,” it wrote in a statement.

“Poland does not and will never accept the conduct and the results of the ‘election’ held on these territories,” the Ministry stated.
