Molotov cocktails thrown at Russian embassy in Moldova during elections

On Sunday, a 54-year-old man threw two Molotov cocktails onto the premises of the Russian embassy in Chisinau during the Russian presidential election voting. The perpetrator was apprehended by the police.

The 54-year-old is a citizen of Moldova and claims (police have yet to verify this information) to also hold Russian citizenship. He cited dissatisfaction with the policies of the Russian authorities as the motive behind his actions.

The Russian embassy, as quoted by Moldovan media, stated that it “expects fair and severe punishment” for the perpetrator and that the elections are continuing “despite provocations.”

From Friday to Sunday, presidential ‘elections’ are being held in Russia, with Vladimir Putin likely to secure another term.

Opposition candidates were not allowed to participate in the elections, although Putin does have formal rivals. In Moldova, Russian citizens are voting on Sunday. Tensions in Transnistria

Despite Chisinau’s ban, Moscow opened four polling stations in the separatist Transnistrian Republic.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova issued a statement “categorically protesting against Russia’s conduct of unsanctioned electoral activities on the sovereign territory of Moldova in administrative units on the left bank of the Dniester.”

“This action constitutes a serious violation of international law norms. We appeal to the international community to support the rule-based order and condemn the actions of the Russian Federation,” the statement read.
