Heavy on rhetoric, lacking positive action: expert on Weimar Triangle meeting

Dr Chris Morris of the University of Portsmouth spoke to TVP World about the Weimar Triangle and how the regional alliance relates to policy towards Ukraine following German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s hosting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron in Berlin on Friday.

We’re facing something of a leadership crisis across Europe. The Weimar Triangle really hammers this home. We’ve got, not just three sets of national priorities, but also three different personalities,” Dr Morris asserted.

“Unfortunately what we’re seeing more and more of, when it comes to Ukraine is there’s an awful lot of finger pointing and rhetoric but in terms of positive action, that is getting harder and harder to come by,” Dr Morris noted.
When asked about the fallout of Friday’s meeting between the three leaders, Dr Morris was not optimistic.

“Many spectators will have been hoping for an unambiguous show of unity from this summit. Unfortunately we do not seem to have quite reached that threshold. I think that’s going to have some very negative connotations moving forward, perhaps even emboldening Russia,” Dr Morris declared.

The Weimar Triangle is a regional alliance between France, Germany, and Poland. It was established in 1991 in the German city of Weimar. The group is intended for promoting cooperation between the three countries in cross-border and European issues.
