Poles took 27 million sick leaves in 2023, with the average length of absence being 10 days, as reported by the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS).

The most common causes for taking sick leave were musculoskeletal problems and respiratory system diseases, according to the ZUS data.

In the span of a year, Poles took a total of 287.2 mln days off due to illness or the need to care for a child or another family member.

In comparison to the year 2022, the number of absence days caused by illness decreased by 0.6%, while the number of instances of taking sick leave went up by 0.2%.

Over half of the medical leave notes issued by doctors were given to women, and nearly 50% of all sick leaves taken lasted no longer than five days. The largest percentage (26.9%) of days taken off due to illness was observed in the 30-39 year old age group.
