The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (EU), at the ambassadorial level, reached an agreement on Wednesday to allocate additional funds for the European Peace Facility and to establish a dedicated fund within it for providing military assistance to Ukraine, amounting to EUR 5 billion in 2024.

This information was conveyed by the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council on social media platform X.

“Deal‼️ EU Ambassadors agreed in principle on a reform of the European Peace Facility, to support Ukraine with EUR 5 bn budget for 2024. The EU remains determined to provide lasting support to Ukraine and ensure that the country gets the military equipment it needs to defend itself,” the statement read. Following Russia’s military incursion into Ukraine, the EU and its member states have consistently extended significant political, economic, financial, humanitarian, and military assistance to Ukraine, totaling over EUR 85 bn over the past two years.

Recognizing the imperative of further bolstering military support for Ukraine, the EU High Representative recommended that member states establish a dedicated fund of EUR 5 bn for the ongoing year within the framework of the intergovernmental European Peace Facility.

This allocation will be utilized for procuring ammunition and military gear destined for Ukraine, as well as continuing the training of Ukrainian forces.

The proposal for the new facility is expected to be deliberated upon during the upcoming European Council meeting scheduled in Brussels on March 21-22.
