Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that, together with the foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, he is planning to carry out extensive changes in the country’s embassies.

Tusk spoke to state-owned TVP Info about the need to appoint a new Polish ambassador to the United States after a Tuesday visit to the country to meet President Joe Biden.

“We are currently carrying out a rather serious operation in regard to this,” he said. “After the President [Andrzej Duda - TVP World] seemed to have given up on the idea of cooperation... Minister Sikorski and I decided that we would therefore ask the president for permission to make changes to most of the embassies,” Tusk added.

The head of government stipulated that he would not be announcing specific names at this time.

He went on to say that “If necessary, we will recall the ambassadors to the country until the president changes his mind or until a change of president, [and] diplomats serving as charge d’affaires will be carrying out the duties of ambassadors.”

“If such a solution satisfies the president, well too bad,” he added. “Either way, we need to build and improve a team that is loyal to the Polish state and that will conduct our affairs in all embassies,” the PM further remarked.

“This is not retaliation; many ambassadors surely deserve to continue in their post,” he added.

He also addressed the case of the ambassador to the U.S.

“Ambassador [Marek - TVP World] Magierowski never was a fan of mine, but my opinion of his work here in Washington is high,” Tusk said.

Plans to introduce changes in embassy staff come in the wake of the October 2023 parliamentary elections in Poland, in which the Law and Justice (PiS) party failed to achieve an outright majority, thus paving the way for the Civic Coalition, spearheaded by Donald Tusk, to form the government together with the Third Way and the New Left.
