The Pentagon has announced that the U.S. Department of State has endorsed the potential sale of close to 1,800 air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles to Poland.

The U.S. Department of State has approved the potential sale of over 821 AGM-158B JASSM surface-to-air missiles with a range of nearly 1,000 kilometers for a maximum price of USD 1.77 billion, the Pentagon reported on Tuesday.

It has also backed the potential sale to Poland of up to 745 mid-range AIM-120C-8 air-to-air missiles for an estimated USD 1.7 bn and 232 tactical short-range AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles for an estimated USD 219 million, the Pentagon added.

The missiles will be accompanied by missile-related equipment and logistic support.

Air-to-air missiles can be used by the F-16 and F-35 fighter jets, which have been purchased by Poland.

According to the Pentagon, additional missiles will help Poland strengthen its defense and, at the same time, increase the interoperability within NATO.
