The political consensus in our country regarding security matters makes Poland the most stable partner of the U.S., Donald Tusk said on Tuesday. The Polish PM is in Washington, D.C., where, together with President Andrzej Duda, he is to meet, among others, the U.S. president Joe Biden.
“We are the only Western country that borders both Russia and Belarus and Ukraine. We are the largest country in the region, we allocate the most money for our defense, and we are the most stable partner for the United States,” he said in an interview for private TVN 24 news broadcaster.
PM Tusk pointed out that “a strong, equipped Poland, supported by allies, is not only a matter of our security, but the security of the entire West.”
“NATO must accept that if not today, then tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, operational capabilities on NATO’s eastern flank must be greater,” he added.
The Polish PM stressed that his visit together with President Andrzej Duda to the U.S. is not a “celebratory” visit commemorating Poland’s NATO accession anniversary because, as he stated, it is not an appropriate time for celebration. He thus added, the visit is taking place because we are in a wartime situation - for some, and a pre-war situation - for the entire world.
Tusk stated that it is not his task to put Poles in a bad mood, but given our geographic location, “we must be aware that ignoring what is happening around us does not increase our security.”
Economy and strength
According to the Prime Minister, if Europe is “as militarily strong as it is economically, financially, technologically, and culturally, no one in the world will dare to take any aggressive actions against Europe.”
“To effectively deter Putin, Europe must believe that it is possible to transform financial, economic, and population potential into significant military force,” said the head of government.
In the opinion of the Prime Minister, “slowly there is an awareness emerging that Europe must become increasingly independent and mature, that the period of military and geopolitical childhood and early youth is behind us.”
Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that the size of the army cannot be underestimated at present. He pointed out that in modern warfare, two issues can be decisive - ammunition and the number of soldiers.
The Prime Minister assessed that “some in the West” perhaps still do not realize that in modern warfare, two issues can be decisive. The first is ammunition, and the second is the mobilization of people.
Regarding aid for Ukraine, the Prime Minister emphasized that sanctions against Russia “must cease to be fictional sanctions.”
“Half of Europe is still trading with Russia and Belarus. Many companies, also in Poland, effectively bypass the sanctions because somehow nobody is interested in enforcing them with full force,” Tusk said.
