The Polish ambassador in Washington, Marek Magierowski, expressed concern about the content of the letter of some Polish activists, in which they appealed to avoid deeper Polish involvement in the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the largest Polish organizations in the U.S. have expressed their support for further assistance to Ukraine.
“The Embassy of Poland in Washington, D.C. has taken note of the positions expressed by some members of the Polish diaspora - the Polonia - in the United States, regarding Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine and its implications for Poland. We are concerned by the content and the tone of some recent statements, mirroring the Kremlin’s rhetoric in this respect,” Magierowski wrote in a statement.
The announcement was published a day after a letter regarding the upcoming visit of Polish leaders (President Andrzej Duda and PM Donal Tusk - TVP World) was published by several Polish activists, including the management of the Polish-American Strategic Initiative (PASI), the Polish American Congress in Southern California and New Jersey, as well as representatives of the Polish National Alliance in the state of New York.
In it, activists suggested that NATO is “an instrument for realizing the geopolitical ambitions of the dominant members of the alliance,” warned against “offensive rhetorical excesses” and “empty threats” against Russia, opposed Poland’s deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine and “joined those European leaders who call for a peaceful solution to this conflict.”
In his statement, the ambassador replied that “the only way to secure a peaceful future for Europe and the Transatlantic Community is through ensuring Russia’s strategic defeat in its war of aggression,” and that this view enjoyed broad political consensus in Poland. He also repeated the appeal of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, to pursue Poland’s interests, which also includes further aid for Ukraine.
The position supporting the current war policy and support for Kyiv was published by the largest Polish organizations, including the Kosciuszko Foundation, as well as the Polish American Congress and the Coalition of Polish Americans.
In a joint statement, the head of the Polish American Congress, Frank Spula, and the head of the Coalition of Polish Americans, Leszek Pawlik, called on Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as U.S. President Joe Biden, to discuss “how to provide greater effective support for Ukraine and an end to the Kremlin’s aggression” and warned that If Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, “his next target will be the Baltic states and Poland.”
“We remain strongly opposed to any form of appeasement. History teaches us that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, and freedom is not free,” Spula and Pawlik emphasized.
In a letter addressed to President Biden, the Kosciuszko Foundation’s leaders thanked him for his commitment to NATO, as well as Polish and Ukrainian independence, and expressed hope that Congress would continue to support Ukraine in its fight.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a threat to Europe and the free world. One is reminded of the quote of our patron, Kościuszko, who said that he was fighting ‘for our freedom and yours’,” wrote the president of Kosciuszko Foundation, Marek Skulimowski, and the president of the board of trustees, Alex Storożyński.
