The world is more dangerous today than it was 25 years ago–Russia under Putin has become an existential threat to us, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said at a lecture at the University of Warsaw on Friday, marking Poland’s upcoming 25th anniversary of entering NATO.

“The post-war international order is wobbling, but it hasn’t collapsed yet, NATO still has tremendous pull, Finland and Sweden have joined the ranks of members, and I hope Ukraine will join one day,” Sikorski said.

He added that “if politicians in Western Europe genuinely believe that Russia, under Putin's leadership, has become an existential threat to us, then our actions must align with this diagnosis.”

“Not for the sake of applause, but to ensure the security of our citizens, not against NATO, but to strengthen it, not to escalate the conflict, but to end it quickly and to deter a potential adversary,” Sikorski stressed.

The FM further pointed out that Europe may have to deal with a defeated Putin’s army at Ukraine’s eastern border or with a victorious Putin’s army at the alliance’s eastern border. “Polish and European interests are the same in this matter, among other things, it depends on our actions which scenario will come true,” the official said.

“Poland is not alone, it is a member of the strongest military alliance in the history of the world. That’s why we have a chance to make things go our way this time,” he noted.
