Sweden’s accession to NATO enhances the security of Poland, the Baltic Sea region, and the entire NATO, bolstering the collective ability to deter and defend against threats from Russia - Poland’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday.
On Thursday, Sweden officially became the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson handed the accession documents to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the State Department.
Poland welcomes Sweden among the NATO member states, highlighting this as a pivotal event that strengthens the unity of the Euro-Atlantic community. The Ministry emphasized the significant impact of Sweden’s membership on the security of Poland and the entire NATO, enhancing the collective defense and deterrence capabilities in the face of Russian threats. The Foreign Ministry noted that Sweden’s, and earlier Finland’s, NATO membership affirms the sovereign right of countries to choose their alliances, emphasizing that such decisions are made solely by the Alliance members and aspiring countries. It also underscored the importance of NATO’s “open door” policy for the stability and security of the Euro-Atlantic area, a principle that should continue. The cooperation with Sweden within NATO and the European Union is expected to further strengthen collective security.
Prior to Sweden’s accession, the latest country to join the alliance was Finland, in April 2023. Poland will celebrate its 25th anniversary of joining NATO on March 12.
