Czech President Petr Pavel announced Thursday that the amount needed to purchase 800,000 artillery ammunition for Ukraine had been raised. The missiles are to be purchased in countries outside the European Union.

The campaign initiated by the Czech Republic now includes 18 more countries. The ammunition should arrive in Ukraine in the coming weeks, Pavel said. The Czech president did not want to talk about the amounts paid by each country. He said Norway had pledged to cover the amount that was missing on Thursday. “Now it will be up to the skills of our companies and the defense ministry to speed up the whole process,” Pavel added. The Czech head of state, who is a retired general and has headed NATO’s Military Committee in the past, said at the Munich Security Conference in February that there was a possibility of buying about half a million 155mm caliber missiles and 300,000 122mm caliber missiles. These could be delivered within weeks if financing is secured. Unofficially, the ammunition is said to be coming from countries such as South Korea, South Africa, and Turkey.
