I appeal to you regarding food security on our continent; this is one of the conditions for us to be safe in all aspects, said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the congress of the European People’s Party (EPP) in Bucharest on Thursday. Earlier, he met his Romanian counterpart, Marcel Ciolacu.

In his speech, Tusk assessed that Europeans will become truly united when they clearly see that the EU is “truly our Europe, that it is a safe home for our citizens.”

“Today, our farmers, our producers are waiting patiently for such a signal. They want a Europe that will also defend them and understand their concerns,” he said.

The Prime Minister recalled that a few years ago, he appealed to European leaders to unconditionally support Ukraine and also called on them to establish a European energy union in order to become independent of Russian resources. He added that when the migration crisis began to escalate, he called for solidarity and cooperation to defend the external borders.

“And today, I appeal to you regarding food security on our continent. This is one of the conditions for us to be safe in all aspects,” he declared.

“I know that with leaders like you, like presidents, prime ministers, with leaders like Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola, we will also overcome this challenge,” Tusk added.

The appeal came amid various farmers’ strikes taking place across Europe. They demand a withdrawal from the European Union’s Green Deal, which they deem to be destructive to their livelihoods and built on false premises. They also call on European governments to help tackle a surplus in EU markets caused by cheap imports, mainly from Ukraine.

After meeting Tusk before the EPP event, the Romanian PM stressed that his country and Poland “share common interests and goals in meeting current challenges, such as protecting European farmers and aiding Ukraine.”
