According to sources within the Ukrainian military intelligence service (HUR), a drone attack targeted iron ore enrichment facilities in Zheleznogorsk, located in the European part of Russia, on Tuesday night, as reported by Reuters.
“Today, as a result of a drone attack in the Zheleznogorsky district, a fuel tank at the fuel and lubricants warehouse of the Mikhailovsky Mining and Processing Plant was set on fire,” Metalloinvest said in a statement after the first attack.
Earlier on Wednesday, the governors of three Russian regions—Kursk, Belgorod, and Voronezh—reported overnight drone attacks targeting military airfields and fuel bases, among other targets. According to the authorities, most of the drones were destroyed. There were reports on social media of a fuel tank being hit and a fire at a site in Zheleznogorsk.
Modern warfare
The number of drone raids on military, industrial, and technological targets in Russia has increased significantly in recent months.
Moscow accuses Kyiv of these operations. Independent experts stress that the drone attacks, at least some of which are carried out from Russian territory, are targeting facilities increasingly far from Ukraine. For example, on January 21, a liquefied natural gas terminal in Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea, near the Estonian border, was attacked.
Drones are also appearing over and around Moscow, resulting in the closure of airspace over airports there.
The Mikhailovsky Mining and Processing Combine, located in the city, is one of Russia's largest iron ore processing plants. One of the largest plants producing raw iron ore materials in Russia in Zheleznogorsk, Kursk Oblast, was attacked by unidentified flying objects. Reportedly, the drone struck right into the fuel tank on the territory of the plant.
