N: During the European People’s Party (EPP) summit in Bucharest, held on Wednesday and Thursday, the Romanian government is actively seeking key positions in the upcoming reshuffle of high-ranking EU posts following the European Parliament elections.
According to the Romanian Digi24 news website, the largest party in the European Parliament (EPP) is primarily concerned with a prominent position for Romania’s outgoing President Klaus Iohannis, who is most likely to take on the post of the president of the European Council, which is to be vacated by Charles Michel of the Renew Europe Group.
Furthermore, in a vote on Thursday, EPP members are also supposed to confirm European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen as their candidate for the top position in the EC, the website reported.
Digi24 added that the EPP, the Socialists and Democrats, and the Renew Europe group will once again form a majority in the EP and make the final decisions regarding posts at the EU.
Other arragements
Another position that could fall to Romania is the EC Vice President for Enlargement and Neighborhood Affairs. Bucharest could argue its important role as a promoter of the accession of Moldova and Romania’s significant role in EU and NATO relations with Ukraine. This seat could also be occupied by Iohannis, as the candidate must have previously served as prime minister or president of a member country.
The website also claims that Poland could be given a new portfolio of defense commissioner that would be held by current Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.
European People’s Party Congress
The Congress of the European People’s Party, co-hosted by Romania’s National Liberal Party, will commence on Wednesday and conclude on Thursday in Bucharest. Poland will be represented by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who also heads the Civic Coalition (PO) party, a member of the EPP. Additionally, the Polish People’s Party (PSL) is also part of the EPP.
2,000 participants from 44 countries have been invited to the congress, which will take on issues such as preparations for June’s EP elections, the adoption of the EPP’s election manifesto, and choosing its candidate for the post of EC head.
Also scheduled to speak at the congress are politicians from countries outside the EU, including Moldovan President Mai Sandu, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, as well as representatives from Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, San Marino, and Switzerland.
