More than half of Germans oppose the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, with nearly a third expressing opposition to sending any weapons to the war-torn country, according to a poll commissioned by the German Press Agency (dpa).
Some 58% of the survey’s participants support Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s opposition to providing Kyiv with modern missile systems with a range of up to 500 kilometers. At the same time, 31% expressed strong opposition to any delivery of German weapons to Ukraine.
The possibility of deploying German missiles capable of attacking targets on the territory of the Russian Federation in Ukraine was supported by only 28% of respondents. According to the poll, 14% of Germans had no opinion on the issue.
As the dpa agency noted, the fear that Germany could be drawn into the war is the main factor behind Sholz’s refusal to provide Ukraine with modern weapons from Berlin’s arsenal.
Support for the Ukrainian armed forces so far
The EU provided the Ukrainian armed forces with EUR 6.1 billion in funding between 2022 and 2024 under the European Peace Facility (EPF).
This sum consists of two extra support measures worth EUR 1 billion each and seven sets of assistance measures totaling about EUR 500 million each, which are expressly intended to be used for the delivery and joint acquisition of missiles and ammunition.
“Together with the military support provided by EU member states, the overall EU support to the Ukrainian army is estimated at EUR 28 billion,” the European Council’s official website states.
