Nine people were injured in a Polish minibus crash on the A4 motorway near the exits leading to the towns of Nossen and Wilsdruff in Saxony, Germany.

According to local media, at around 4:05 in the morning, a 42-year-old Mercedes driver crashed into the back of a truck driving in front of him. As a result, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, hitting the guardrail multiple times before overturning and coming to a stop on the right lane.

“In total, nine passengers of the Mercedes were injured, three of them seriously. The highway towards Dresden had to be completely closed from 4:15 to 6:15 due to rescue operations and cleanup efforts,” said a police spokesperson.

The minibus has been completely destroyed, local police reported, adding that the possibility of the minibus driver drifting into a 'micro-sleep' and losing control of the vehicle was one of the potential causes of the crash, which was being investigated.

German daily Bild’s website recalled that in recent months, there have been other serious accidents on the A4 highway - a key highway running through Saxony.

“The highway, built at the turn of the millennium, is completely worn out: the asphalt is crumbling, the concrete is cracking, and the guardrails are worn out. Everything needs to be replaced, and since 2021, there has been an increase in construction work, along with the number of accidents. There are many construction sites, and this situation will continue for years. The result is dangerous spots and serious accidents,” emphasized the newspaper.
