The Polish government has established a new Ministry of Industry in the southern city of Katowice, and its unusual location suggests the importance of the southern industrial region and its energy transition challenges.

Katowice, which hosts the Ministry of Industry from March 1, is the heart of the Polish coal-mining region of Silesia. All other ministries are located in Warsaw.

After coming to power in December, prime minister Donald Tusk said he planned to create a separate ministry responsible for industry, with Marzena Czarnecka as its head.

The Prime Minister’s Office said on February 20 that “the cabinet adopted a resolution on the creation of the Ministry of Industry, submitted by the Minister of Industry.”

The ministry would be responsible for “not only mining and metallurgy but also nuclear, oil and gas, and in general, energy resources.”

“This is the first step, but the challenges Poland faces around the transformation of the whole industry are very big,” Borys Budka, the assets minister, pointed out.

Finance Minister Andrzej Domański commented that the Polish economy needs a strong industry, and Silesia has the best infrastructure and professionals.
