“Sweden is on the final straight on the road to NATO membership, an important step for strengthening defense on the Alliance's eastern and northern flanks,” Deputy Prime Minister, and Defense Minister Wladysław Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on social media on Monday.
Hungary’s parliament voted Monday to accept Sweden into NATO. The ratification still has to be signed by the head of state; should it happen, Sweden will become the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
“Sweden on the final straight on the road to NATO membership. This is an important step for strengthening defense on the eastern and northern flanks of the Alliance. The new role in the Baltic region is shaping up as an important part of the Allied strategy. Great congratulations!,” the defense minister wrote on X.
In the Hungarian parliament, 188 MPs voted in favor of Sweden’s accession to the Alliance, including deputies of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition and most opposition parties. Only six deputies of a far-right party voted against accession.
