During the opening of the spring session of parliament, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called on the chamber to vote for the admission of Sweden to NATO.

The Prime Minister announced Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance on Friday during a meeting in Budapest with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Orbán stated that there were several attempts at external interference in Hungary’s decision regarding Sweden, but he emphasized that “Hungary is a sovereign country and does not allow others to dictate terms.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told parliament on Monday that Swedish-Hungarian defense cooperation and Sweden’s accession to NATO would strengthen Hungary’s security.

“Therefore, I ask my fellow lawmakers to approve the legislation on Sweden’s NATO accession in a vote today,” Orbán said.

The Hungarian parliament’s vote, which is expected to pass smoothly after Kristersson’s visit, during which the two countries signed an arms deal, is intended to end months of delays in completing Sweden’s security policy shift.

Hungary will become the last country in the Alliance to accept Sweden’s accession.
