Mykhailo Podolyak, an aide to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has expressed conviction that Ukraine and Poland will reach an agreement concerning border protests staged by Polish farmers.

Podolyak told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) on Sunday that this matter had no impact on bilateral relations as Ukraine understood everything that had been going on in the political sphere in Poland.

He explained that Ukraine understood the source of farmer protests, which “have been taking place all over Europe, in France, and in Germany.”

Podolyak added that farmers had been staging protests against the EU Green Deal as they were against the project. “It is again not about bilateral relations between Ukraine and Poland,” he said.

He also declared that the Ukrainian side understood the economic component of the protests and was ready to hold talks with Warsaw and Brussels as Ukraine exerted no competitive pressure on Polish farmers.

Podolyak explained that Ukraine wanted the borders with Poland to be unblocked in order to secure deliveries of military equipment for the Ukrainian army, and admitted that the Donald Tusk government had been seeking a solution to the problem.

“Poland is our key transit partner in deliveries of military equipment for our armed forces,” Podolyak said.

Polish farmers, staging protests all over Poland and at the border with Ukraine, claim that imports of cheap Ukrainian grain and other agri-food produce have undermined their markets and hit their businesses.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday that road and rail border crossings with Ukraine were to be reclassified as critical infrastructure giving “a 100% guarantee that military and humanitarian aid will reach Ukraine without delays.”
