Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski has expressed hope that the U.S. Congress’ approval of a new aid package for Ukraine will change the situation for the benefit of the country invaded by Russia.
“Two years after the beginning of Russia’s invasion, the war is at a stalemate, but I hope that this can be changed when the U.S. Congress has approved a new aid package for Ukraine,” Minister Radosław Sikorski told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) at the Polish consulate general in New York on Saturday.
But he also admitted that, irrespective of the current stalemate, Ukraine has managed to achieve a huge success if we look at the situation from the perspective of the last two years.
Sikorski granted the interview on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion.
“The war situation has been constantly changing. It is at a stalemate now. But if the U.S. Congress adopts a new USD 65 billion aid package, this will give wings to Ukrainians and lead them to victory,” the Polish foreign minister said.
The U.S. has so far approved more than USD 110 bn in defense assistance for Ukraine, but President Joe Biden’s request for another USD 60 bn for Kyiv is stalled in the U.S. Congress.
Sikorski said that the main goal of his visit to the U.S. was to convince the U.S. Congress to adopt this aid package for Ukraine, “to appeal to the Congress, to its speaker, and to explain the source of Russia’s aggression as well as its results not only for our region but also for the U.S.”
Minister Sikorski will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington on Monday.
