Russia accuses us of being “prisoners of Russophobia,” but phobia is an irrational fear. Meanwhile, Russia threatens us with nuclear annihilation almost every day, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said on Friday during a debate at the UN Security Council.

Sikorski addressed the Security Council’s deliberations on Ukraine on the occasion of the 2nd year-mark of the Russian invasion of that country, and devoted his speech to refuting the claims made earlier by Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzia, which he said were astonishing.

“Ambassador Nebenzia has called Kyiv a client of the West. Actually, Kyiv is fighting to be independent… He calls them Nazis. Well, their president is Jewish, the defense minister is a Muslim and they have no political prisoners. He says Ukraine is wallowing in corruption. Well, Alexei Navalny documented how honest and full of integrity his own country is. He blamed the war on U.S. neo-colonialism. In fact, it was Russia that tried to exterminate Ukraine in the 19th century, then under the Bolsheviks, and it's the third attempt,” Sikorski pointed out.

He added that contrary to Russian accusations of “Russophobia,” fear of Russia is not irrational as the Kremlin is posing a constant nuclear threat.

Sikorski also expressed outrage at the historical lies of the Russian diplomat who accused Poland of attacking Russia during World War II and claimed that Russia has always only defended itself against invasions.

“He even said that Poland attacked Russia during World War II? What is he talking about? It’s the Soviet Union that attacked Poland together with Nazi Germany on September 17, 1939. They even held a joint victory parade on the 22 of September! He says Russia has always only beaten back aggression. What were the Soviet troops doing at the gates of Warsaw in August 1920? They were on a topographical expedition?” Sikorski said.

“What the ambassador has achieved, is to remind us why we resisted Soviet domination and what Ukraine is resisting now. They failed to subjugate us then, they’ll fail to subjugate Ukraine and us now,” the FM concluded. Earlier, the Russian ambassador delivered a tirade lasting several minutes, blaming the United States and the West for the war. He also announced that he would not listen to their speeches.

Sikorski was one of several diplomatic chiefs who spoke at Friday’s debate. Alongside him, his British counterpart David Cameron, French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Ukrainian FM Dmytro Kuleba, as well as the heads of the diplomatic ministries of South Korea and Japan, among others, condemned Russia.
