The impasse in Congress over the aid package for Ukraine has already greatly harmed the credibility of the United States, and were it to persist, allies may begin to have doubts about the United States, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told U.S. commercial broadcaster MSNBC on Thursday.
The minister responded to a question from “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski about the consequences of the prolonged debate in the U.S. Congress on the aid package for Ukraine, which has been defending itself against Russian invasion for two years.
“In reality, a lot of damage to America’s credibility has already been done. This package has been debated for months, and what this package - or rather, the lack of it - makes us realize is that even if… the president of the United States wants to help allies, he may not be able to do so,” Sikorski said.
Sikorski emphasized that if the situation persists, America’s allies, both in Europe and Asia, will begin to doubt alliances and start to secure themselves by looking elsewhere to ensure their security - which would reduce Washington’s global influence.
The Foreign Minister argued that U.S. assistance to Ukraine is necessary because, although Europe supports Kyiv financially, it is not able to replace American military support, which is crucial for the course of the war with Russia.
He also assessed that if Russia wins in Ukraine, Putin may use the additional resources gained there to attack Poland or other countries in the region.
