Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party suggested on Tuesday that the parliament vote on ratifying Sweden’s NATO membership bid on February 26, a proposal they fully support.
“Our group wishes to support” Sweden’s NATO bid, said Fidesz in a document, asking the parliament’s Speaker to include the vote in next Monday’s agenda. Fidesz holds a large majority in parliament.
Sweden applied for NATO membership almost two years ago, marking a significant policy shift following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Hungary is set to be the final NATO member to approve Sweden’s bid to join the alliance.
Sweden’s Defense Minister, Pål Jonson, expressed his approval of Hungary’s plans to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán hinted on Saturday that the parliament could soon ratify Sweden’s bid when it reconvenes for the spring session.
“It’s good news that our disagreement with Sweden will be resolved soon,” Orbán told his supporters.
Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, stated that if Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, visits Budapest, Hungary would discuss strengthening economic and defense ties.
Since 2001, Hungary has leased Gripen fighter aircraft from Sweden’s SAAB.
