Iga Świątek wins WTA 1000 tennis tournament in Rome

Top-seeded Polish tennis player Iga Świątek beat Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur (seeded ninth) 6:2, 6:2 in the final of the WTA 1000 clay court championship in Rome on Sunday.

By winning the tournament, Świątek who defended the title she won last year and also won her fifth successive tournament. She has been undefeated in her last 28 matches, which is the fourth longest run in women’s tennis since 2000 – the only female athletes with better results has been the US sisters Venus Williams (35 matches undefeated) and Serena Williams (34 matches undefeated), and Belgium’s Justine Henin (32 matches undefeated).

This year, Świątek has won tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Stuttgart, last year having won in Rome and Adelaide. Her greatest achievement to date is a Grand Slam win at the French Open in 2020.
