As reported by Michał Dworczyk, the head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, a member of the board of the Union of Poles in Belarus, Andrzej Poczobut was detained on Tuesday morning.
"Today in the morning, Andrzej Poczobut was arrested in Grodno. A righteous and principled man for years fighting for the rights of Poles in Belarus, repeatedly repressed by the Lukashenka regime. Member of the board of the Union of Poles in Belarus. Andrzej, hold on! We will not leave you!," Mr Dworczyk wrote on social media.
Andrzej Poczobut's wife, Oksana, reported on social media that officers in balaclavas came to the apartment in the morning.
According to unofficial information obtained by the co-workers of the "znadniemna.pl" website, the policemen also came to the apartment of Maria Tiszkowska, a Polish leader in Wołkowysk in the Grodno region.
Yesterday, the head of the Union of Poles in Belarus, Andżelika Borys, was sentenced by a court in Grodno, western Belarus, to 15 days in custody for organising the traditional cultural event Saint Casimir's Fair. Earlier, two Polish activists in Brest, western Belarus, were arrested for organising the Indomitable Soldiers Day at the local Polish school.
