Over 70 MEPs demand head of EU diplomacy resignation

More than 70 MEPs have so far signed an appeal for Josep Borrell to resign as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. According to MEPs, the politician caused serious damage to the EU's reputation during his recent visit to Moscow.

"We are very concerned about the humiliating events during the visit of High Representative Josep Borrell Fontelles to Moscow, which seriously damaged the reputation of the European Union. Mr Borrell decided to go to Moscow on his own initiative. This decision (...) was not in line with a values-based foreign policy" , reads the letter, initiated by Estonian MEP Riho Terras and under which signatures are still being collected.

"Instead of vehemently condemning Navalny's arrest and visiting him in prison, Mr Borrell falsely stated that there was no question of EU sanctions against his imprisonment. Borrell did not defend EU interests when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sharply criticised the European Union and the US. (...) Instead of opposing Lavrov, Borrell attacked our main ally, the United States," the letter continues.

According to members of the European Parliament, Borrell's visit to Moscow seriously damaged the EU's reputation and the dignity of the office of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Among the current signatories of the appeal are Polish MEPs, both belonging to the ruling party and the opposition. The letter is addressed to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, but has not yet been delivered to her.
