Football: Wojciech Szczęsny named best goalkeeper in Italy

Wojciech Szczęsny has been named the Best Goalkeeper of the 2019/2020 season in Italy by the top tier division Serie A authorities.

The goalkeeper of the Italian champions Juventus kept 11 clean sheets in 29 league games he played in, and recorded the highest percentage of saves (74%). Szczęsny conceded a total of 33 goals and saved two penalties.

According to the official Serie A webpage, the results were based on the Stats Perform statistical surveys and tracking data provided by Netco Sports.

“The performance evaluation is based on the official stats of the Lega Serie A, that represent the objective criterion for scientific evaluation of the best football players of this season, which we completed with great determination, overcoming a lot of difficulty”, said the CEO of the Serie A Luigi De Siervo, drawing attention to the exceptionality of the past season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from Szczęsny, the awards were granted to Stefan De Vrij from Inter (Best Defender), Alejandro Gomez from Atalanta (Best Midfielder), Ciro Immobile from Lazio (Best Striker), Dejan Kulusevski from Parma (Best Under 23 Player) and Paulo Dybala from Juventus, who received the most prestigious title of the season’s MVP.

The Pole’s contribution to the 36th title in the history of the side from Turin did not remain unnoticed by the journalists as well. "La Gazzetta dello Sport" daily prepared a summary of the performances of the Italian champions. Wojciech Szczęsny received a very good note, called by the daily “one of the most underrated players in the team”. His was only bettered by two of his teammates: Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.
