Interview: 'Poland played huge role in changes of 1989'

PolandIN talked to Professor James Mark, an historian specialising in state socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, about the events leading to the fall of communism in 1989.

Professor Mark indicated that in many ways the experience of Central and Eastern Europe “is a minority experience” as the “vast majority of people who lived under communist regimes in the 1980s continued to live under communist regimes and many do until today.”

How did economic factors influence the communism system to fall? Who were the main actors in the process? What role did Poland play in the region? Why has the fall of the Berlin Wall become a symbol of the collapse of the Iron Curtain?
