The premiere of the Witcher is scheduled for 2020, but every piece of information is being examined by fans and media. Filming will start in winter in Eastern Europe, but the final cast is not yet known, with auditions still ongoing.

The series, co-produced by Netflix and the Polish studio Platige Image, will be based on the eight-book Witcher saga by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. One of the executive producers of the series is Tomasz Bagiński. He was interviewed by Polish media news website Wirtualne Media.

“This is one of only a few series that is evoking so many emotions. We can only compare it to the noise surrounding ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series being produced by Amazon. They have not created a single line of the script yet; we are much further,” Mr Bagiński said in the interview.

He added that the whole team producing the series wants to emphasize the Slavic, Eastern European environment, which was present in the original books. “We do not want it to be a typical American series,” he said. “It will be a great proposal not only of fans of the Witcher but also to viewers all over the world,” he added. “There will be a lot of surprises, the series will evoke discussions for sure,” the producer said.

Mr Bagiński also spoke about cooperation with Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the Witcher saga. “He is being kept up to date about the work over the series, he will see the script,” he said. However, the producer did not reveal the details of his contact with the author of the saga. “It will remain our little secret,” Mr Bagiński said.

The Witcher is the story about Geralt of Rivia, the hired monster killer in a fantasy world. The main hero involuntarily becomes involved in the major political intrigues of the world at war, searches for his missing protégé and loved ones which disappeared in the mayhem. Three parts of the Witcher video games produced by the Polish developer CD Projekt Red were also based on the story of Geralt.

Tomasz Bagiński is a Polish director, illustrator, and animator. His debut animated short movie “The Cathedral” was nominated in 2003 for the Oscar for the Best Animated Short Film. Mr Bagiński has already been involved in production associated with the Witcher. He produced cinematics for the video games. Mr Bagiński will also be a director of at least one episode of the Witcher series.
